What to Do if Your Friend (or Child) is Arrested?

As we approach the end of the first week of June, many children across the mid-western and southern states have completed the school year, had graduation ceremonies, and have welcomed their summer break. On the east coast of the US, many schools have about two weeks of school remaining. College students may be home and/or working their summer gig. Both youth and their beloved guardians are ready to breathe a sigh of relief and find relaxation. Some of you may have plans to get more outdoors, connect with relatives on road trips, or simply just take advantage of local summer events.

To strengthen our parental community, and in light of recent national news events involving youth and young adults; more so in particular- Black, Indigenous, and Latino; The list of things to warn Black children about keeps getting longer (msn.com) we wanted to assist you with preparing your loved ones with possible engagement with law enforcement.

Please take the time now while your schedule may be more flexible to read, discuss, and share these topics with those within your circle. Check out the link below:

  • If a family member (or loved one) is arrested- next steps, and how to provide them support.

  • If your family member has mental health, physical illness or disabilities and is detained; how do you support them to ensure they are safe?

  • How to prepare your child (even if they are a minor) should they become detained or arrested.

  • Where to get assistance if you feel your or their civil rights are violated with engagement with law enforcement.

At the Parent Connection, we want to be proactive in equipping our diverse families and communities with accurate information during such a challenging time of navigating the complexities of the legal system.

We are saddened by recent events (gun violence, and increased acts of aggression) impacting youth and families at such alarming rates and hope to earn your trust with our transparency and advocacy efforts.

We appreciate the O'mara Law Group for sharing their resource guide. We hope to share more in-depth guidance along the way on such vital topics.
